BIRTHDAYS AT BUSH ELEMENTARY

As we enter this next school year, we want all children to feel special on their birthday.  Teachers do special things for students on their birthday such as recognizing them in front of the class and celebrating as their name is called on morning announcements.  Students are allowed to come to the office and get a birthday sticker so that everyone knows that the day is special for them!

You can help your child’s day be special by having a party for them at home.  However, schools do not have parties for birthdays.  You are, however, allowed to send a birthday treat.

Allowable Items

We will, however, allow them to bring a birthday treat to share with the class.  Birthday treats may include a birthday bag full of small trinkets and candy, an individual item such as a notepad or book, or individual muffins or cupcakes (store bought and packaged).  In keeping with child nutrition standards and in response to the growing concern for childhood obesity and childhood diabetes, we encourage the gift bags or muffins as a healthy alternative.

Procedure to deliver

Parents may bring the birthday treats on their child’s birthday between 7:15-7:45 am.   Parents will deliver the items to the child’s pod.  There will be a teacher on duty that will point you in the right direction for leaving the items for your child’s teacher.  If you miss the 7:45 am deadline, no worries, the teacher will accept the treats the following day at the same time.  Birthday items will not be accepted by the office and/or delivered to the classrooms.

Permission Letters

You will receive a permission letter from your child’s teacher at the beginning of the year.  This “birthday permission” letter will give you the ability to either allow or decline the option for your child to receive the treats from other students on their birthdays.  Once you sign the permission letter, you child will either receive all treats or no treats throughout the year.  The school cannot control what other parents put into the birthday bags, so there is no opportunity to say things like, “only if it does not contain nuts.”    If your child has food allergies, we highly recommend that you decline the birthday treats.  We will not withhold birthday treats for disciplinary measure.

Last 5 minutes of class

The last 5 minutes of class will be used to pass out the treat bags and/or muffins to the students.   Students are allowed to look at the items in the bag or eat their treat just prior to dismissal.  Teachers are not allowed to take longer than 5 minutes of instructional time to distribute and consume treats.

Birthday Cupcakes that have been iced to look like a full cake are too hard to serve in a few minutes and are very messy.  These cakes/cupcakes are not allowed.

All leftover food items will be disposed of prior to dismissal.  No food items will be returned.
